What is a UTR number?

A Unique Tax Reference (UTR) number is a 10-digit number that uniquely identifies an individual, limited company or partnership for tax purposes. A UTR number is issued by HMRC when you first register for personal self assessment, or when you register a limited company or partnership. Once you or your business have been issued with a UTR number, it will never change.
